Rio Grande do Norte

As traffic roars by in all its variety of shapes, sizes, sounds and polluting clouds of black smoke, there is one creature that just doesn't seem to be bothered by the statistics of traffic accidents : the poor dumb donkey.

It won't move an inch, will not step aside, will not even move it's head to see the hooting, zigzagging heavyweight truck that is about to break all the bones in his skinny body and catapult him straight to donkey's heaven, alongside the road.

As we drive through another sleepy town, the taxi driver points to one of the houses and tells me this is where he was born. He pulls over, and we talk to an old man who takes care of the abandoned mill.

He gladly shows us in.
